Travel Insurance? What is that? As awesome as traveling is, there are many risks involved in it. You are going to explore a land you have never been to, a land where as simple as buying a bottle of water from a supermarket could be a challenge. Although you will eventually learn to go about these things the hard way, which kind of makes the trip exciting but what would you do if you suddenly fall ill without the comfort of a familiar face? Or end up loosing your belongings in a place where you know no one? This is where Travel Insurance comes in.

One of the main ways to make the most out of your holiday is to travel smart. Plan months in advance, do your research and know exactly what to do because every destination is different. Having a Travel Insurance policy saves you a great deal of stress and gives your mind and body the break it deserves. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider getting Travel Insurance for your trips:

Reason 1: Medical Expenses

This is a no brainer. The last thing you want on a holiday is to get sick or meet with an unfortunate accident. You are going to be in an environment which you are not used to, the air you breath, the water you drink, everything is foreign to your body and if it rejects it, there is no telling what could be the consequences. With a travel insurance, you can hike to the middle of nowhere, paraglide in Nepal (Yes, i did that, check it out here), sky dive in Dubai or go bungee jumping in New Zealand (on my bucketlist) without having to worry about the risks because your medical expenses will be covered and mind you in many countries this could end up in thousands of dollars. Reason 2: Lost or Stolen Baggage

Personally this is my biggest fear, what would you do if you are on your life changing solo trip and end up loosing all your belongings? There goes all your photography equipment, your laptop and other personal gadgets. One would say that all those things can be replaced or you should avoid carrying too many gadgets, which I totally agree with but what would happen if your passport is among those things, who will stamp it? (sorry, I had to). While in Japan you could leave your luggage for hours to find it in the same place, in Europe and many other places, you have to watch out for pickpockets (read more about my trip to Japan here). However, if you are covered, you can easily claim all those things if you are smart about it. This does not mean you leave your iphone unattended while you place your order at Starbucks. Read more about this here

Reason 3: Flight Cancellations

Cancellation of a flight depends on a lot of factors, what airlines you chose, what’s your final destination, how many connections you have, and nobody can predict the weather. I was very close to missing my flight back to Dubai last year in Nepal, because of a 2 hour delay in a 25 min domestic flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu and an overthinker like me would have sleepless nights worrying about such an unfortunate event, but I was prepared because I was covered with a travel insurance. Just make sure to read the cancellation policy of your airlines and your travel insurance carefully.

Reason 4: You Are Unable To Travel

Last summer I traveled to Greece, I was so excited for this trip that I had watched almost all possible vlogs of those lovely islands on youtube and read like a hundred blogs about one of the most gorgeous place on earth. Two weeks prior to the trip, stupid me tripped over a heavy plate in the gym and managed to sprain my ankle. All hell broke loose at that moment, more than my physical injury, I was worried about climbing the steps of Santorini with a cast on my foot. However, I got lucky, it was a mild sprain which healed in a week and I was ready for my trip just in time, check out what happened in Santorini here. That was probably the longest week of my life, but don’t do what I did, get yourself a Travel Insurance and get compensated if you are unable to travel due to an unforeseen health issue. Reason 5: Visa Application

This is for those who don’t have the luxury of visa free travel to a destination and have to struggle with the visa process. Many visa applications have a Travel Insurance as a mandatory or an optional requirement, having one will not guarantee you a visa but it will certainly make your application stronger. It gives the visa officer one more reason to believe that you are serious about your visit to the country you applied for and the validity of the insurance gives a strong assurance of you leaving the destination and returning back within the allowed time.
